1964 CZ 250 Twin Port Joel Robert

1964 CZ 250 Twin Port Joel Robert
Before entering the motorcycle industry, the CZ factory was in the arms trade. Naturally, the CZ 250 “Twin Port” was a bike that overwhelmed the opposition.
Simple but So Efficient
From the creation of the 250 category — initially the European Cup, then the European Championship and finally the World Championship from 1961 two- strokes like Maico, Greeves and, above all, Husqvarna ruled the races. Since 1960, one motorcycle dominated motocross in Czechoslovakia — the CZ 250 “Twin Port,” so-called because of its twin exhaust pipes (whose technical justification has never been proved). Specifically designed for motocross, this was a modern but simple machine with a traditional layout featuring three transfer ports in the cylinder, four-speeds and a genuine 22 hp.
Not So Funny After All
First tried in Belgium, its obsolete appearance and pressed-steel mudguard brought condemnation in the West. However, critics were startled when the Twin Port, lightened by brakes and crankcase made of magnesium plus aluminum mudguards, won the World Championship hands down in 1964, 1965 and 1968. The 1964 version was well- balanced, with excellent brakes and suspension. With a reliable motor in a light frame, it foreshadowed the machines of the future. It was a CZ 360, competing as a 500, that brought the reign of the big four-strokes to an end and also won three World Championships.
