1982 Ducati Hailwood Replica

1982 Ducati 900 Mike Hailwood Replica
Tribute to a great rider
In 1978, Mike Hailwood won his umpteenth IT, riding a works 900 Ducati. To celebrate this exploit, two years later, the Bolognese firm launched the Mike Hailwood Replica, a fully-faired version of the 900 SS. This fairing, with extremely clean lines and a little platform behind the front wheel, was based on those of the works endurance racers.
Too Close for Comfort
Unfortunately, the Italians, who often let the benefits of form override those of function, made the fairing far too large and it scraped at the least opportunity. That put a huge restriction on the ground clearance of the Mike Hailwood Replica, which nevertheless – like every Ducati – had extraordinarily good roadholding.
Extra Punch at Low Speeds
Apart from its integral fairing, the MHR (as the bikers quickly named it) also adopted a single-seat saddle with a removable backrest and, above all, two 40mm carburetors to replace the 32mm units mounted on the 900 SS. The performance of the machine was definitely improved, particularly the gain in power at low speeds. In 1980, this Replica was still a machine of the old school. One
had to fold out the kick-start and tickle the carburetors before starting, because unlike the 900 SS, there was no electric start – that would have been out of place on a replica racing machine! A mere dozen years later, the 900 Mike Hailwood Replica was keenly sought after by collectors because it was one of the most handsome supersport machines in motorcycling history.
